Article on ASI Contest Best Sommelier of the Americas 2025

The article about “Best Sommelier of Americas 2025” competition held in Sonoma in February has been released for the latest issue of the Japan Sommelier Association magazine. I attended to watch the final competed among three finalists. Remarks at the press conference after the final, individual interview with Joris Gutierrez Garcia, the champion and comments by co-chairs of the ASI contest committee, Shinya Tasaki and Olivier Poussier are also included in the article.

A big congratulations to Joris and all the participants who represented the country and did their best! I truly respect the efforts, hard work and strength of those sommeliers and am always encouraged and motivated by them when attending the sommelier competition. Thank you to the ASI, for all the help in writing this article.

日本ソムリエ協会の会報誌の最新号に、2月にソノマで開催された、ASIアメリカ大陸最優秀ソムリエコンクールについて執筆した記事が掲載されています。南北アメリカ大陸とカリブ海の国々の代表が参加する地域大会で、米国での開催は初めて。ファイナリストは、米国、カナダ、コロンビア代表の3選手。カナダのJoris Gutierrez Garciaさんが見事、優勝しました。

決勝観戦、そして結果発表の後、プレスカンファレンス(少人数でなごやか)にも参加し、そのあと、優勝者に個別インタビューもでき、その内容をまとめました。プレスカンファレンスでは、終了後、緊張のステージから解き放たれ、全体に笑顔があふれ、そしてこれまでとこれからの軌跡を思い起こし選手たちのじんわりな瞬間もありました。ソムリエコンクールは、みてる側としても、全力を尽くし勝負に臨む選手たちの姿にはいつも尊敬の念を抱き、わたし自身も得るものや刺激があり、機会があれば参加したいと思っています。

ASI contest committee のco-directorsの田崎さんとOlivierさんからもコメントを頂くことができました。お二人とも、歴代の世界最優秀ソムリエでいらして、偉業を成し遂げ、その後も長年関わられていて、その言葉に重みがあります。記事での引用はスペースの関係でちょこっとなのですが、お二人にそれぞれインタビューさせていただけて、色々なお話しを伺えたのも貴重な機会でした。
